Who are you looking for? Who are you waiting for?

We spend a lot of our lives looking for role models, mentors, teachers and gurus to guide us on our path.  There is nothing wrong with this.  Sometimes, finding the fight person at the right time can really help.  BUT it is important to realize that in the absence of such a figure, we can safely rely upon ourselves…. Yes, you heard me right… ourselves!!!  We carry within us everything we need to know to make progress on our paths to self-realization.  The outer world serves as a mirror.  (Yep, those gawd awful mirrors again.)  Our inner world has a magnetic force that draws to us what we need so we can go to our next “step”.  All we need to do to see that we already have everything we need is to let go of our belief that we need to seek in order to find.

The path of the spirit is often defined as a journey with a “goal” such as the fabled pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.  In this story, a person begins a search for something they want but do not have and then they find it…… However, most of us know that getting what we want only makes us happy for a moment and then the happiness passes until something new presents itself.  Joy is a permanent aspect of our inner selves and is not separate from us at any point.  We do not have to travel to find it or imagine that it resides only in the body of someone else.  Most of the “best” gurus, masters and teachers, point this out to us all the time… this “elixir” is something we already possess.

So when we find ourselves on our path, not knowing which way to turn and wishing for guidance, we can turn to ourselves. We may not know the right answer rationally or intellectually, but if we simply ask, let go and wait patiently (????)…an answer will come.  The more we practice this and trust this process, the less we will look outside ourselves for teachers and guides for we will have successfully become our own.

But alas, I must look outside myself a bit…. I need to find some coffee…..

  1. The capacity/willingness to go within and hold that place even(most importantly) in times of great confusion, fear, doubt, vulnerability, loneliness, etc. is the royal road to greater understanding and IN-tuition.
Often times holding that space does not seem to produce any instantaneous knowledge or direction however the effort is never wasted or without benefit.
Going within is not a process of acquisition or self improvement but one of deconstruction(the process of removing self created and imposed obstacles)!
Relying (exclusively) on outside authority of any form i.e. books, teachers, practices, gurus, etc.) will only lead to dependence!
Much of the path entails an ever increasing capacity to be aware of our tendency to rely on something beyond ourselves and to go within and hold a space of listening attention which is an active silence!

  2. & I’m learning that even talking about my inner answers with others isn’t always the right thing, either.

It appears (in my inner guidance) that the power in my self discoveries is diluted if I talk about them too much. I think it’s because I still tend to look for approval & validation from others FAR too much, so I am being encouraged with better results personally when I don’t follow that old, habitual path. I’m not sure if this would be true for everyone, tho.

All I can say is it sure feels good to listen for that inner voice on a regular basis!

  3. I hope to never again peel the layers of the onion to get to the core of the matter the way I just did. Did I get there? Yes. Did it take slamming myself into the wall so hard it rolled my eyes inwards so that I would truly look at the fear that had had me so petrified? I wish I could say otherwise, but yes it did. But…several doors have now opened that I would never have gotten to go through. Breathing is good. Listening, hearing, and heeding my inner counsel is even better. Thank you to my very best friends for being there to help me as I made this trip to me.
