Pretend it is Sunday…. am checking in

Think I am going to try to sleep in tomorrow so I will check in Sat eve…..  I just received this email from a friend with this writing enclosed:

  Today’s thought from Hazelden is:

When you do something you are proud of, dwell on it a little, praise yourself for it.
  –Mildred Newman

Each one of us is very good at something. Maybe it’s baseball or tennis where we display talent. Maybe we’re good in math or at giving reports. A few people are talented at being good listeners or helpful friends. To recognize our own talents we may need help from others. It’s always so much easier to see our faults, or the ways we don’t meet our own expectations.

But the fact is, we are all skilled in many areas of our lives. To accept praise — better yet, to quietly give it to ourselves — is a sign of healthy growth.Totally needed that…. so go pat yourself on the back (as I will) and let’s have a great Sunday…. no coffee – too late, but perhaps a “spot” of tea…..

  1. So true! Being able to own and acknowledge our unique set strengths, skills and qualities offsets the tendency to focus on our weaknesses and deficits.
Research focused on at risk children and families have identified interesting and informative qualities/characteristics that fall under either “risk factors” or “protective factors”.
The presence of risk factors raises the probability of mental health, drug and alcohol and/or relational problems manifesting while the presence of “protective factors” provides greater resiliency re the same constellation of concerns.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this research is that it is far easier and more beneficial to strengthen protective factors than it is to try to address the risk factors.

  2. Oh that is so true. I know I have definitely needed help from others to identify my own talents. I can now at least accept compliments without telling the person they are wrong, wrong, wrong. And there have even been a few times where I have told myself I did a good job–very big accomplishment there. Enjoy your day of rest :).

  3. This makes me smile!! Congratulations Diane! & I think I’ll give myself a pat on the back, too. Happy Sunday!

  4. I have never been a good listener.
As far back as i can remember as i respond while I’m not listening my answers have always met with corrections or I’m wrong or not listening.

I Pat myself on the back for acknowledging this and correcting the behavior..
