I was called a peep today…. I’ve been called many things in my life… but “peep”? I always that a peep was a baby chick (is my rural background showing?) or a marshmallow treat that is always available around Easter. But, I guess a friend is also a peep…
What is the etymology of the word “peep” (peeps)?
Webster’s defines “peep” (noun) as:
Date: 15th century
1 : a feeble shrill sound : CHEEP
2 : a slight utterance especially of complaint or protest
3 : any of several small sandpipers
I’ve also heard “peep” used in the context of a newly-hatched chick,
such as “… the mother hen and her peeps.”
“Peep” is used to refer to several various shorebirds in the western United States.
In contemporary slang, “Peeps”, (from people), is used to refer to friends, buddies, etc.
A social network
A peep show
A science fiction book
A species that is called, “peep”
An iPhone ap
A wine blog
A yoga pose
There is even a Peeps Festival around Christmas
So what was I? I am hoping the friend or buddy category…. I have heard that friends (peeps) are like bras; close to your heart and there for support.
Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you’ve said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I am hoping that just for the past few moments, I’ve brought a smile or two into your life.
Today – I sincerely hope I am your “peep”….. Join me for coffee?????
